What is geotag attendance, and how accurate is it?
What is geotag attendance? It is a way of marking attendance where every punch is saved with the latitude and longitude of the phone that made it, alongside the time.
AutoDial CRM adds that position to each punch and checks it against the radius of the employee's branch.

What is geotag attendance?
Geotag attendance is a punch in or punch out saved together with the phone’s coordinates, so the record shows both when and where the employee started work. AutoDial CRM captures that position on every selfie punch in its staff attendance app.
The word comes from photography, where a geotag is the location stored inside a picture. Applied to attendance, it replaces the trust placed in a signature with a position read by the phone. A manager no longer has to wonder whether “9:00” in the register was written at the office or at home, because the punch itself carries latitude and longitude. On its own, a geotag only records a place. Most systems go a step further and compare that place with a circle around the workplace, called a geofence, to label the punch as inside or outside. That pairing is what people usually mean by GPS attendance. Geotags are popular with businesses that have several branches or staff who start the day on the road, since no device has to be installed at any door. Accuracy and privacy are the two things to understand before relying on one, and both are covered below.
Geotag attendance: how a punch gets its location
When an employee taps to clock in, the attendance app asks the phone for its current position. The phone answers using satellite signals and, where available, nearby mobile towers and Wi-Fi networks, then returns a latitude, a longitude and an estimate of how precise the reading is. The app stores that position with the timestamp. If the phone has no data connection at that moment, a well-built app keeps the punch on the device and uploads it later. Finally, the position may be compared with the branch’s geofence to mark the punch inside or outside.
Notice what a geotag does not do. It does not prove who held the phone, which is why many apps pair it with a camera step, and it says nothing about where the person went after the punch. It is one fixed point in time, taken twice a day, and that limited scope is both its weakness as evidence and its strength for privacy.
Geotag attendance terms
| Term | Plain meaning | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Geotag | A saved map position, usually latitude and longitude | On each punch in the attendance record |
| Geofence | An invisible circle drawn around a workplace | Branch settings, as a radius in metres |
| Radius | How far from the office centre a punch still counts as inside | The geofence setting for each branch |
| Outside punch | A punch made beyond the geofence | Accepted or refused, depending on the branch rule |
| Fake GPS | An app that feeds a false position to the phone | Flags shown to the office |
| Live location | Positions recorded through the working day, not only at the punch | A route view, separate from attendance |
| Offline punch | A punch made with no signal and uploaded later | The record, once the phone reconnects |
Geotag attendance accuracy and fake GPS
A phone’s position is an estimate. Out in the open it is usually good enough to place someone at a particular building. Inside a concrete office, in a basement or among tall towers, the reading can wander well beyond the walls, and two punches from the same desk may land in slightly different spots. That is why a geofence needs a margin: too tight and honest staff are marked outside, too loose and a nearby cafe counts as work.
The other risk is deliberate. Apps that fake a phone’s location are easy to find, and some employees will try them. A sound geotag system does not simply trust the reading. AutoDial CRM, for staff who use live location, marks spoofed readings so the office can see them, and excludes those readings and physically impossible leaps from the kilometre total. For radius settings by site type, see the GPS attendance app page.
Geotag attendance and privacy
A position is personal data, so handle it with the same care as any staff record. In general terms: tell employees what is captured and why before you start, capture location only for work purposes, limit who can see it, and keep it no longer than you need. A geotag taken once at the punch is far less intrusive than following someone all day, and the two should not be confused. Rules differ between Vietnam, the EU, the UK, India and other places (general information, not legal advice), so check what applies to you. The question of all-day tracking is covered in is it legal to track employee location.
How AutoDial CRM handles geotag attendance
Every punch in AutoDial CRM pairs a liveness selfie with the phone’s coordinates. The position is checked against the radius of the employee’s branch, and each branch decides whether a punch from outside counts. Punches without signal wait on the phone and upload later. All-day route tracking is a separate, opt-in feature for field staff, covered by the employee location tracking app; it is never switched on by a geotagged punch alone. The rest of the app, from dialing to reminders, is on the auto dialer app page.
Geotag attendance example
An illustration, not a named customer. A freight forwarding office in Da Nang, Vietnam, has 18 staff, including 5 who meet clients at the port. The administration lead sets a 120-metre radius around the office in the Hai Chau district and lets the port team’s branch accept outside punches. In the first week, three desk punches from the building’s underground car park show as outside, so she widens the radius to 180 metres. By the end of the month the record shows every port team punch with its own coordinates, and nobody needs to phone in to say where they are.

What is geotag attendance FAQ
What is geotag used for?
A geotag attaches a map position to something, such as a photo, a post or an attendance punch. In attendance, it shows where an employee was standing when they clocked in or out.
Is geo tagging compulsory for attendance?
No, not as a general rule. It is a choice each employer makes, although some employers and public programmes require it for their own staff, so check the policy that applies to you.
How do I geotag my location when marking attendance?
Switch on your phone's location service, allow the attendance app to use location, and make the punch as usual. The app reads the position and saves it with the punch for you.
What is an example of a geotag?
A pair of coordinates such as 16.05 N, 108.20 E, which points to central Da Nang in Vietnam. Many apps also turn the coordinates into an area or street name so people can read them.
Does geotag attendance affect salary?
Not directly. A geotag only records where a punch was made; an employer may then use the attendance record when working out pay. AutoDial CRM has no payroll and hands the record over as an Excel export.
Is geotag attendance the same as GPS attendance?
Almost. GPS attendance usually means the punch is also compared with a geofence around the office, while a geotag is the saved position itself. AutoDial CRM does both on each punch.
How accurate is geotag attendance?
Outdoors with a clear sky, phone positions are usually close enough to tell one building from another. Indoors, underground or between tall towers they can drift much further, which is why geofences need some slack.
Can geotag attendance be faked?
People do try, mostly with apps that feed a false location to the phone. Good systems look for it: in AutoDial CRM, spoofed readings from staff using live location are marked so the manager notices them.
Does geotag attendance track me all day?
No. A geotag is taken at the moment of the punch. All-day tracking is a separate feature; in AutoDial CRM it needs the employee to switch on live location from a consent screen, and it runs only while they are on duty.
Is AutoDial CRM a geotag attendance app?
Yes. AutoDial CRM records geotagged attendance: each selfie punch carries the phone's position, which is tested against the employee's branch radius.
What is the best geotag attendance app for telesales staff?
The best geotag attendance app for telesales staff is one that lives inside the tool they already call from. AutoDial CRM combines geotagged selfie punches with dialing, lead notes and follow-up reminders.
How much does geotag attendance cost with AutoDial CRM?
AutoDial CRM costs ₹299 per user a month billed every 3 months (₹897), or ₹199 per user a month billed yearly (₹2,388). In US dollars that is $3.79 or $2.79 per user a month.
Your next call is ringing.
Install AutoDial CRM, import your leads and let the dialer, the WhatsApp and the follow-up alarm do the remembering.
